Liberal Learning Requirements

Four courses required for the Deaf Education major also fulfill some Liberal Learning requirements. These courses are as follows:

  • RAL 225, WGS 225, ECE 102 or LIT 310 covers the Liberal Learning Literary Requirement
  • SPE 203 covers the Liberal Learning Social Science Requirement
  • US History course for Liberal Learning History Requirement
  • MAT 105 or 106 for Liberal Learning Quantitative Reasoning Requirement

To fulfill both TCNJ’s Liberal Learning requirement and State teacher certification requirements students must also take:

  1. a Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) course.  This course should be an art, music or theater class and not a literature course.  Music, Art, Theater Class Recommendations for Special Ed/Deaf Ed Students — This is a just a guide.  Students are responsible for checking that courses meet TCNJ’s Liberal Learning Requirements as well as the Civic Responsibility requirements.
  2. a US History.  US History Course Recommendations for Special Ed/Deaf Ed Students –This is just a guide.

Coursework must also fulfill the College’s Civic Responsibility Requirements of Community Engaged Learning, Gender, and Global Perspectives. (The Race and Ethnicity requirement has been waived for education students). These requirements can be met through courses (including elective courses), programs, or sustained experiences. Consider trying to meet some of these requirements through your VPA and US History Liberal Learning courses.  Many FSP Seminars  cover some of these Civic Responsibility requirements.

If your second major is: Then take:

Biology Take MAT 105 or MAT 106
English Instead of taking RAL 225, WGS 225 or ECE 102 you should take LIT 310
History Your history major should already cover the US History required correlate.
Math or iSTEM MAT 105 or MAT 106
Sociology In addition to taking MAT 105 or MAT 106, you will need to take STA 115 or STA 215 as a Sociology correlate.
Spanish
Psychology SPE 203 will count as a Psychology option

 

Course Load

First year undergraduates take four courses/semester. In order to graduate on time, most Deaf Education students take five  courses/semester for two or three semester, and/or take summer courses, and/or transfer in acceptable courses from another college. PAWS will not permit a student to register for more than 4.5 units.  To take 5 classes, students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher, have earned a minimum of 8 course units at TCNJ, and have permission of their adviser.  Students who meet these requirements will be allowed to enroll in five classes.  Freshmen and new transfer students are not allowed to enroll in over 4.5 course units.

Applying for Graduation

Students must apply for graduation using PAWS and submit the Conferment of Degree form. There are three graduation times each school year: May, August and December.  May applications are due in January, August applications are due in February, and December applications are due in September. There is a graduation fee which students must submit. Students who apply after the application deadline will be charged a late fee.  Students must apply, as appropriate in their course of study, for the bachelor’s degree and then for the master’s of arts in teaching.  Undergraduates attend the graduation ceremony of the their respective second major; graduate level students attend the SELL Department graduation ceremony.

Graduate Application

In order for the college to transition a student from undergraduate to graduate status, the student must complete the graduate application during the last semester of undergraduate study.  To be eligible for the graduate program students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have earned a minimum of 32 undergraduate course units, and have fulfilled all requirements of both majors and of the Liberal Learning Program.  It is a student’s responsibility to apply for admission to the graduate portion of the program. When completing the online application choose admit type “graduate matriculation”  then choose ” MAT Deaf/ELEM (5 Year Program)”.   When asked for previous school attended, put TCNJ.  This online application should be filed by: March 1st for Summer or Fall admission to the graduate portion of the course of study; October 15th for January admission to the graduate portion of the course of study. Students do not need to do the following parts of the application process:

  • letters of recommendation
  • fees
  • transcripts
  • resumes
  • GRE exam
  • essay

Information on applying for graduate level Student Teaching/Internship II

The STEP Office holds a pre-Student Teaching meeting toward the end of the Fall semester.  This meeting is for any student who expects to student teach in the following academic year.   Applications for Student Teaching are completed over the winter break and are due at the beginning of the Spring semester.  Students must complete an application for the deaf education placement and a separate application for the elementary education program.  Applications are submitted to the appropriate department and online to the STEP Office.

Comprehensive Exam

All master’s candidates are required to register for the comprehensive exam.  In deaf education, this is typically given only in the spring semester. Click here for specific information on the comprehensive exam.

NJ Transfer

Information on transferring undergraduate classes to TCNJ is available through NJ TRANSFER.  If a course is listed on NJ TRANSFER as an acceptable course, you need not get a course approval form signed by the Office of Records and Registration.  You may simply take the course and have the transcript sent back to TCNJ after the course has been completed.  Please remember however, that most community college courses are three credits and that you will be responsible for the extra credit.
